Bullying A National Epidemic - 1883 Words

Bullying is a national epidemic. Bullying can be defined as the use of force or threat to aggressively impose domination over others. The behavior of bullying others is often repeated over time. My essay is focused on the bullying of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual or Transgender (LGBT) youth in the school environment. Bullying is unethical and it has to be stopped by spreading awareness and building a safe environment at school such as creating more gay-straight alliances (GSAs) groups that will help increase understanding among the LGBT and straight students and faculty. According to an article â€Å"Schooling, Sexual Orientation, Law, and Policy: Making Schools Safe for All Students† by Charlotte Patterson, research suggests that LGBT youth are often exposed to school environments that are hostile to them. We often hear news and stories about LGBT youth getting bullied because of their sexuality. A recent incident is the tragic suicide of Alexander â€Å"AJ† Bettes Jr, wh o identifies as gay. He was subjected to intense bullying at Southeast Polk High School. AJ was only sixteen years old. Bullying the LGBT youth in school due to their sexual preference is unethical. There are various forms of bullying. The most obvious form of bullying is physical bullying. This is when bullies use physical actions to control their victims. This form of bullying involves kicking, punching, slapping, hitting and other forms of physical attacks.
